Derailleurs of the World: Huret

In the history of derailleurs, Huret is an often-overlooked. The French company cannot lay claim to big innovations like Campagnolo (first parallelogram racing derailleur), Simplex (first spring-loaded upper pivot to compensate for front shifts) or SunTour (slant parallelogram). And yet Huret’s derailleurs were innovative in their own ways.

Hideki Sasaki has added a new books on Huret to his “Derailleurs of the World” series. These books are the most complete catalogues of classic derailleurs. Every derailleur is shown in photos, with dates and a few specs.

On 107 pages, the book describes every derailleur Huret made from 1930 until the company, by then owned by the German component maker Sachs, was taken over by SRAM in 1997, and derailleur manufacture in Europe ceased.

When we first started talking about shock absorption and fork blades, it was commonly believed that fork blades didn’t flex significantly. Experts told us: “All the flex in a fork is in the steerer tube, where the lever arm is longest.” And yet, when we rode bikes with flexible fork blades, they clearly took the edge of bumps. Was this another myth in need of debunking?

Grappig hoe Jan zo dol is op Frans spul terwijl mijn wedstrijd ervaring eind jaren 70, begin jaren 80 echt extreem negatief was. Er is een reden dat Shimano toen zo hard de markt veroverde, alles was gewoon functioneel kwalitatief Uiterst Teleurstellend en alleen Campa was dan in ieder geval kwalitatief nog okay.

Vooral Franse onderdelen waren ronduit slecht (tot aan gevaarlijk toe)

Sorry maar nou gaat hij echt ouderwets kort door het bochtje

Het hoeft niet ultrastrak, maar als wielrenner de bocht uitzwiepen met een groffe 50kmpu was doodeng op van die oude alu fietsjes (Alan/Vitus). Klachten over dinky carbon wieltjes... echt wel. En dan ben ik een mannetje van 65kg. Als je geen baseline stelt dan is stijver natuurlijk wel degelijk beter.

Over off-road zullen we het maar niet hebben (heeft hij het ook niet over).

Toch wel enigszins vervelend voor Jan. Het is niet echt vertrouw wekkend als jouw product van de velg af knalt en dit niet gebeurd bij een ander merk (waar Jan het niet zo hoog op van heeft). Aangeven dat het aan de velg ligt (onder gedimensioneerd) terwijl die in spec zijn is not done imho. Als de draad van zijn TLR banden langer is dan die van de concurrentie zal dat speelt ongetwijfeld een rol spelen. Jan danst om de brei heen door niet direct daarop in te gaan.
