Van Nederland naar Australië per fiets

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 23.
Today I felt like an ant, crawling around with thousands of other ants. I was part of the mound of tourist ants. I took photos, holding my phone up high. One of the many. Busses and cars transport the ants along busy roads and then wait outside where the ant density is too high. Drahtesel plies the same roads, and like the busses and cars, waits patiently outside.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 24.
On a back road in the northern plains in Italy, I thought, this is pretty awesome. I am cycling across the planet. Away from the constant racket of cars, trucks and motorbikes, passing through fields and over valley ridges, I feel like I am cycling again. Not just making sure I’m staying alive. Happy.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 25.
When I was a kid I loved mazes. Venezia is one big maze of little alley ways, bridges and squares. I ended up cheating and used Google Maps to find my way. And then I watched people on Piazza San Marco.

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 26.
Busy straight roads on the northern Italian plains. Thanks Fabio from the Italian cycling forum for accompanying me for some of today. The kilometres raced by exchanging stories. Then, head down, as I burned the kilometres away. There’s no way to meander here anyway.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 27.
From busy Italian plains to quiet Slovenian hills. I was warned about the busy traffic near Trieste, so, I thought I would avoid it by cycling through Slovenia. It was lovely.

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 28.
White horses, science fiction underground river caverns, Trieste in sailing regatta fever, 50kg heave – no gym required, climb into Slovenia. All in beautiful sunshine. Thanks Marko for the tips!

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 29. Croatia is the country of smells. Intense, varied and beautiful. It started at the border. Croatia is the country of challenging cycle paths. I pushed my bike for the first time. And now, in October, it is the country of closed camping grounds.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 33.
I enjoyed today. The islands are beautiful. Pag island is bleak. The mountains on the mainland loom over the coast shrouded in cloud. And it bucketed down.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 34.
The weather was meant to be a repeat of yesterday, and I was planning to have a R&R day in Novalja. I looked out the window and the sun was shining. Today was a cycle day. I’m writing this sitting in the main square in Zadar with guitar music playing in the background, people dining, and others strolling past the art stands.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 35.
Warning. Repeat. Repeat. Croatian scree slope bike paths (like Istria). Beautiful coast with lakes and islands. Searching for the peaceful cycling road. Oh. And an amazing sunset in a beautiful town – Šibernik.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 36.
Someone switched on the colour switch – like when Dorothy clicked her red shoes in the Wizard of Oz. The water is turquoise and warm, the villages are beautiful nestled in little coves, and lonely islands dot the coastline. Cycling the coast road to Split is like heaven on earth.

Van Nederland naar Australië met de fiets. Dagen 37-39.
Ik heb een paar erg leuke dagen gehad. Nieuwe fietsvrienden, wildcamperen op de eiland Hvar, en nou in Mostar met mensen die zo vriendelijk, gelukkig en gastvrij zijn.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 42.
The last rest day. Local haircut, fortune telling and a hot bus ride through the cold mountain landscape. Tomorrow back on the bike towards Dubrovnik.

An amazing three days in Montenegro. Skirting along the beautiful bay of Kotor, and then climbing 1600m above for a spectacular view.
