Hello a good day!

The subject of this discussion is my labour of love. Though I try to stay out of the limelight, I'll share a little description here.

My wife and I live in the US but when we think of people and places we think of the world as our neihborhood. Naturally, when I had the idea for the fully loaded touring bike photo gallery, the last thing I wanted was for it to be limited to tourers where we live.

I'm happy to say that I regularly get submissions from around the world. For every 1 image you see in the gallery, there are something like five more that I've had to screen and tell the owners that they didn't make it. All the while I continue to seek out places to find other long haul expedition loaded tourers. Me finding this forum is a perfect example. There are many others.

Remarkably, I pay for the whole thing out of my own pocket and work on it in my spare time. Hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours of my own time. I hope to be able to keep up with it for several years and possibly have the submission page translated into other languages. I have a full time job though that has nothing to do with the internet or cycling.

It sounds like there are some misconceptions in the replies above. Touring trhough California doesn't mean that person started there or is stopping there. Gonzalo is in rolling through the sparce lands of Mexico, where you're best served to have what you might need along with you. The "largest panniers" sited in the linked photograph aren't made in the US and neither is the rider. The reason only bikes with four panniers are allowed is several fold. Among the reasons: The volume of submissions would be more than I could handle if lessor loads were open for submission. There would be near two hundred images by now and remember, I'm paying for the server space. Also, bikes with full loads are more interesting to look at. I get emails from people all the time that don't tour in this way but love seeing the photos. Granted, there are several examples of bikes loaded down more than I ever would. I still enjoy checking these bikes out.

Sorry for not being able to speak in the forum's native language. Believe me I'd rather be doing so. I'll have to say the same thing when I find my way into the Asian based journals. When you're trying to talk to the world, Babelfish online translations are far from ideal.

I already thought so. It is a great site and check it twice a week at least, keep 'm comin' :D
So fellow Dutch world cyclists, submit the pics of your bikes...

Hmmm, don't want to start a discussion here ofcourse but it really looks like as if most of the bikes shown are a little 'over-equipped' for the areas they are touring. But that is probably just me.

This one I really like the most (but only rear panniers  )

Hi Whiskey,

Thanks for the kind words. I added two images last night.

I think that discussion was already going on in this thread wasn't it?
Do you carry a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, cookware, food, rain suit and so on? Do you carry a tent that's one size bigger than how many will be staying in it, so you can bring a couple of panniers in at night? Most of these riders are out for 2400K or more and the photo notes don't say where they started or are going.

I had the photo of Joff's high wheeler for some time before posting it. If he only had rear panniers I wouldn't have allowed it but he has as much gear attached forward of the rear panniers as he can. I've ridden one of these and they're a lot of fun. To tour on one though?

Fietsjunks... Wonderful images that they had to work at getting. My first posting here was in reply to their photo collection thread. Hopefully they too will be featured in www.fullyloadedtouring.com and have a link from there.

Have a grand day. I'm off for work.

Cheers,

Hi,

Yes, people wondered why only pics of bikes with rear and front panniers were allowed and I among others wondered why those bikes were more or less 'overloaded'.
I carry a medium load (20kg luggage, 10kg food and water), there are others on this forum who carry waaay more or far less than I do. Looking at the pics at your side I got the impression that non dutch cyclist carry more stuff than the average dutch world cyclist. Here in germany they also carry a lot more than I normally do, everything but the kitchen...

When I am touring (I tour alone) I carry an Exped Sirius Extreme tent (roomy 4 season 2-3 person tent, 3Kg), an Exped down air mattress (way more comfy than the thermarests), a sleepingbag, a Primus omnifuel stove and fuelbottle, 1 pan and pot, clothing for warm, cold and wet weather, sandals, a bike multitool, a leatherman and spare parts. All the stuff fits in my panniers. The tent and extra water (10L) goes on top of my rear rack. For short tours I carry less food and the tent goes in a pannier.

The tent is roomy enough for two with panniers and smelly shoes.
Most of these riders are out for 2400K or more and the photo notes don't say where they started or are going.
It would be nice to see where they're from and where they are heading to :)

They must be sleeping in a sort of base-camp. A toilet-tent, a kitchen-tent and special vip-tent to invite their sponsors

Wow! I'll have to read that journal.

And, this wasn't too far down on the forum page now was it? Sorry that I was late to the party.

Cheers.

What a coincidence, I was cycling this weekend with a couple of people from the Wereldfietser in a part of Holland called the Veluwe and guess who we met.

He is going all the way to India on his bike, it was very interesting to meet this guy. Impressive bike, from a technical point of view. Riding this bike is not without danger, he told us that he broke his arm when he fell because the headlight (inside of the wheel) came lose. I think it's a very dangerous situation when a truck is passing to close.

His website is:

Wow Frank,

Thanks for sharing that photo!

That is a coincidence if you met him this weekend, since I posted the photo this weekend. I looked back and have had it since 24 March.

I've emailed Joff a link to your image. He should get a kick out of it.

Cheers,

Ron
