There was an outbreak of localised violence in Khorog, the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) a region close to the Afghan border, on 21 May 2014, with a second incident on 24 May. The situation is currently calm but tense and further violence remains possible. The government has suspended issuing permits for foreigners to travel to GBAO.
The government has suspended issuing permits for foreigners to travel to GBAO and has also confirmed that access to GBAO is currently not permitted to foreigners, even those in possession of a valid GBAO permit. Foreign nationals attempting to enter are likely to be refused entrance at border crossings into GBAO
