Dag wereldfietsers!

Purpose of this event is that WE group up in the morning for a workout on bike. We are going to follow the route of the race starting in Vielsalm or Gouvy. But we are not meeting there... we all meet conveniently at Liege-Guillemins station at 07.00. Then at 07.18 we take our bikes in the (almost empty) train to Vielsalm (direction Luxembourg). We will start our cycling trip after arrival at 08.20.

Map of the longest possible route (120 km) and the hills:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8& ... d440ce1b4c
The shortest route would be about 40 km.

Note that if you do not want to cycle up on the hills (that's very tough for most people!) you can also cycle in the valley. There are several points on the route where we can meet up again. So cycling enthousiasm is the most important.

You will find the toughest route on the map in the link above. It is easy to follow the route, since the race route is marked with big black/yellow signs. Also the easier alternatives are easy to follow, because then you just cycle along the rivers.

Do NOT think of this race too lightly, and carefully consider your participation. This is not a lazy Sunday ride on your grandmothers' bike. This one takes muscles and for most people good preparation (if you do the hills). I'll even add that you have a great advantage if you are familiar with the route and you have to be familiar with biking up on mountains and hills.

On our route we face the following giants:

# Km 159.0 - Côte de Wanne - 2.7 km climb to 7 %
# Km 166.0 - Côte de Stockeu (Stèle Eddy Merckx) - 1.1 km climb to 10.5 %
# Km 186.0 - Col du Rosier - 6.4 km climb to 4 %
# Km 198.0 - Col du Maquisard - 2.8 km climb to 4.5 %
# Km 209.0 - Mont-Theux - 2.7 km climb to 5.2 %
# Km 223.0 - Côte de la Redoute - 2.1 km climb to 8.4 %
# Km 238.0 - Côte de la Roche aux Faucons - 1.5 km climb to 9.9 %
# Km 252.0 - Côte de Saint-Nicolas - 1.0 km climb to 11.1 %

On the way we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the countryside with hills, forests, more forests, far views, twisting roads, little quiet villages and typical farms...
You will need a good bike with many gears, like a race bicycle or a cross country bike, enough water and energy bars / bread / banana’s for the day and you have to be fit !!! (!!!). Of course there are some places on the way where we can revitalise ourselves (for example a snackbar in Remouchamps, just before we head on to the monster climb Cote de la Redoute).
Please make the bike "tip top" before we go, and consider well if you can take a trip of one hundred kilometre in an area with numerous slopes before you sign up! Also recommended if you know Dutch or French, to take a walkman with radio along, so you can also follow the race by radio coverage during our ride!

As for the 120 km > it includes all the hills from the list and arrival is in Ans
After 60 km in Remouchamps (or less if you skip hills) it is possible to cycle to Aywaille for taking the train back to Liege (and meet again at the finish in Ans!)
After 40 km in La Gleize (or less if you skip hills) it is possible to cycle to Coo for taking the train back to Liege (and meet again at the finish in Ans!)

Hopefully we will arrive before 4 PM at the finish line in Ans. Here we meet up with the CS-tourists, to watch the rest of the race live on the huge screen.

Geïnteresseerden kunnen mij contacteren, vragen mogen natuurlijk ook gesteld worden :)
